According to Statista, there was an estimated 1.75 billion PC gamers worldwide in 2020, up from 1.5 billion in 2019.
2. Most games are downloaded on Steam.
A whopping 50-70% of the world’s PC game downloads take place on Steam. I suppose this is no surprise though when you see just how much of a market share Steam has below.
3. Over 24 million people used Steam at once.
As the pandemic raged across the globe and lockdowns took hold, Steam saw a staggering number of concurrent players online. 24,535,923 users to be exact.
4. WoW is the highest grossing PC game of all time.
World of Warcraft is the highest grossing PC game of all time with an estimated $9.23 billion (as of 2017) in revenue since its debut in November 2004.
5. Steam has over 1 billion accounts.
Steam is a goliath in the PC gaming space. With over 1 billion accounts as of April 2019, it is the king of video game distribution platforms.
6. Almost a third of Steam’s users are in China.
China is one of Steam’s biggest markets. With more than 30 million of Steam’s active user base coming from China, it makes up about a third overall.
7. PC Gamers are ‘old’.
The average age of a PC gamer is 38 years old. Additionally, and perhaps surprisingly, the NPD study found that 49% of players are women.
8. PUBG is the best selling PC game of all time.
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is the best selling PC game of all time with 42 million total copies sold. It was released in 2017.
9. Steam smashed its hours played record in 2020.
Steam had 50.7% more hours played in 2020 compared to 2019. As the pandemic raged across the globe, and lockdowns took hold, people had plenty of time to play PC games.
10. Steam is the by far the biggest PC game distributor.
Steam is the world’s largest distributor of PC games, taking up a whopping 75% of the global market share. This is a truly impressive number.
